2018 Barrel Select Pinot Noir

As wine ages, each barrel imparts its own flavors and aromas on the wine inside. That’s why our founder, David Teppola, developed a barrel-select process many years ago, a method we follow to this day. When it came time to bottle this 2018 Oregon Pinot Noir, our winemaker tasted each barrel, and then blended only the best in a way that highlights the finest qualities of the vintage. We create one “barrel select” bottling for every vintage.
2018 was a smaller vintage for us, after a few years of intense growth we pulled back our production which resulted in fewer bottlings of very powerful wines. Labeled Willamette Valley, this bottling contains fruit from our Yamhill-Carlton Estate, Menefee Vineyard in also in Yamhill-Carlton and Zenith Vineyard in Eola-Amity Hills. Our 2018 Barrel Select Pinot Noir has a definitive rich, bountiful character on the palate. It is robust for a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir, and has notes of powerful dark fruit, with velvety, integrated tannins.

Vintage Information:

2018 started hot and dry through spring and summer and felt eerily similar to 2014 and 2015. Thankfully the valley received a hearty rain weeks before harvest and cool temperatures in September and October slowed ripening and gave the fruit additional hang-time. Harvest came late with small, intensely flavored berries from the hot growing season with a high skin-to-juice ratio leading to intriguing and bold wines. More body, and mature, developed fruit are characteristic of the Pinots, definitely a vintage for those that prefer the warmer, bolder years.
